I started reading this approximately 1 microsecond after I finished The Poppy War, and I consider that a criminal waste of a microsecond which could have been better spent reading about the continuing adventures of Rin et al。Much like its predecessor, the pacing was perfect。 The characters continued to develop and grow, and there were twists aplenty, including some near the end which elicited audible reactions (aka a high-pitched squeal and "ooohhh WHAAAAAT???!?!?!")。 I started reading this approximately 1 microsecond after I finished The Poppy War, and I consider that a criminal waste of a microsecond which could have been better spent reading about the continuing adventures of Rin et al。Much like its predecessor, the pacing was perfect。 The characters continued to develop and grow, and there were twists aplenty, including some near the end which elicited audible reactions (aka a high-pitched squeal and "ooohhh WHAAAAAT???!?!?!")。 。。。more

I knew it, I just knew it was too good to be true。 My blood is boiling, I knew the so called saviours were anything but。 The superior race coming sweeping in to save everyone, sure。 We all know what happened when the white race went to the Asian continent。 This book was commendable for this alone。 It was so infuriating, reading about their arrogance and moral superiority。 This is exactly what they were like when they were civilising barbarians。 The consequences of trusting them were dire。This bo I knew it, I just knew it was too good to be true。 My blood is boiling, I knew the so called saviours were anything but。 The superior race coming sweeping in to save everyone, sure。 We all know what happened when the white race went to the Asian continent。 This book was commendable for this alone。 It was so infuriating, reading about their arrogance and moral superiority。 This is exactly what they were like when they were civilising barbarians。 The consequences of trusting them were dire。This book certainly doesn't hold back on killing off characters for the sake of the plot, and somehow doesn't make war sound boring。 Kitay has my heart。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Overall, I enjoyed it! Not as much as the first book, and I'll admit, for a while, I got stuck in the middle as the Republic started to do its thing against the Empire。 Also, the swearing really takes me out of the immersion, but after a while I'd get used to it。 Those were my biggest gripes。That aside, as things started to pick up after Boyang, I was hooked again! Just when I thought we could ease into the next book when the tide of the last battled shifted。。。that whole last 100 pages。。。god dam Overall, I enjoyed it! The Poppy War was outstanding so my expectations going into this were, to put it mildly, very very high。I read this one more slowly than usual to really take in the whole book- learning about the political/historical/magical background of the world, watching the layers of character development, and appreciating the plot twists and turns。 It blew my mind and I am beyond excited to read book 3。(The same content warnings apply to this book as Book 1, especially violence and addiction)

Other than moments where I felt like it was a textbook, I’m obsessed。 The way Kuang writes war is really wonderful and I loved Rin’s arc in this book。

。。。more

I don't remember this very well, especially since I just finished the third book。Things are OK, things are looking up, things get worse, things get much worse 。。。Rin just makes decisions, most of them bad。 She never really gives them enough thought。 Then, more decisions。 More bad ideas。 More fire, more death。 I don't remember this very well, especially since I just finished the third book。Things are OK, things are looking up, things get worse, things get much worse 。。。Rin just makes decisions, most of them bad。 She never really gives them enough thought。 Then, more decisions。 More bad ideas。 More fire, more death。 。。。more

“I loved an idea of you。 I was infatuated with you。 I wanted to be you。 But I didn’t know you then, and I’ll never really know what you were”This book revolves on grief, trauma, vengeance, betrayal and of course war。 You could clearly describe rin as someone who is ravenous for affection and attention。 From book 1 to book 2 she still longs for someone who could give her the praise that she needs。“You spend your whole life chasing after some illusion you think is real, only to realize you’re a da “I loved an idea of you。 I was infatuated with you。 I wanted to be you。 But I didn’t know you then, and I’ll never really know what you were”This book revolves on grief, trauma, vengeance, betrayal and of course war。 You could clearly describe rin as someone who is ravenous for affection and attention。 From book 1 to book 2 she still longs for someone who could give her the praise that she needs。“You spend your whole life chasing after some illusion you think is real, only to realize you’re a damned fool, and that if you reach any further, you’ll drown”“This world is ephemeral。 Permanence is an illusion。”This book taught me that sometimes the only choice you can make is what or who will you sacrifice。 You’ll be greatly annoyed at the choices that rin made but you’ll have to understand that we do a lot of shitty things to cope up with pain。 She is young, naïve, reckless, and gone through a lot。 I like how she came to lose her greatest possesion and at the same time she has acquired control of it better than the first time。 “It must get worse before it gets better”I rated it 4。5 for the sole fact that some twists are foreseeable and most of the book talked about agricultural sht which is totally fine, but not really my cup of tea。 。。。more
